True Crime Junkies Love “Chase Darkness With Me”

Chase Darkness With Me was an interesting recount of Billy Jensen’s life as a citizen detective cracking cold cases. I was especially interested to learn about his friendship with Michelle McNamara and her investigation of the Golden State Killer that she documented in I’ll Be Gone In The Dark.

This was filled with small stories about cases he worked. He described what worked to solve them and when things remained cold. The crimes were all told in a succinct way that really captured my attention. I was intrigued by solving the crimes too! I liked hearing about the tactics he used to help catch criminals, and the people he worked with who also took on this role.

And yet. Some of this was a little dry and long winded. Also parts just seems very self serving and made it seem like he had an inflated ego. It was just the way he described his work that came off a bit over confident. Some of this was extremely frustrating. I mean, if a citizen’s social media post can help catch a killer, why wouldn’t the police department put out its own similar post? You have to wonder at the detectives working on these cases. This was good, but a little long and hard to get through at the end.
